Timeline - Progress

Late 2019 - Early 2020: School Superintendent and Mayor Vision Discussions: Possibility of a hands-on student learning experience in a downtown location, making use of pending real estate possibilities at Columbia and Pearl. 


March 2020, City reaches agreement to purchase with owner of Apothecary Shop. Viewed as a crucial step in downtown revitalization.  Planning accelerates for educational usage, KISS-TV studios and DECA/Apache downtown location


May 2020, City collaborates with Ball State School of Architecture:  Renderings of building exterior and concepts for interior.


September 2020:  Building purchase is finalized. 

  • City receives Rural Development grant for building purchase, August 2020.
  • City Council approves matching Rural Development grant:


January 2021: Ball State collaboration agreement:  Ball State School of Technology Communications  agrees to a mentorship program with Union City's KISS-TV. Program begins in school year 2022.  Major interaction with Vision Corner facility in school year 2023. 

 

February-April 2021: Lower-level usage plans developed.  Communication plans are developed for additional fund-raising. 


March 2021: Decision is made to elevate the mission of Vision Corner: Based on research of the potential of downtown education facilities, the vision was elevated to adult-level career-focused education and economic development. 


April 2021: Randolph County Commissioners approve $250,000 for Vision Corner project -- enough secured funding to begin aggressive construction.


May 2021: Collaboration agreement with John Jay Learning Center in Portland:  The Jay center provides avenues to technical skills focused in manufacturing; an ideal partner with Vision Corner's focus on Communication, Business Skills and Personal Development skills. 


May 2021: Building exterior is painted. A major symbolic moment, visible proof of the revitalization and economic development progress being made. 


June 2021:  Additional funding secured. Approximately $350,000, assuring completion of Phase One, the lower level.  Active planning underway for Phase Two with launch goal of August 2022.

  • Objectives 2021:
  • August 2021: Final construction blueprints for first-floor
  • August - September  2021: 2nd story windows installed and exterior facade.
  • October 2021: Exterior work completed; interior prepped for winter construction
  • Winter - Spring 2022:  Interior work and full-building electrical, HVAC.
